The Burner Management System

A Burner Management System or BMS is a safety system that ensures the safe start-up, function and shutdown of process burners. The BMS has many uses in various industries including Oil and Gas, Power Generation, Chemical or any other process that always has a need for an industrial burner, furnace, boiler or other equipment with a flame.

The burner management system can monitor flames with flame detectors. It can even manage igniters, burners and actuators, such as shutdown valves.

  • The Burner Management System is meant to perform the following functions:

  • Inhibit startup if the conditions are not satisfied

  • Monitor the burner whether there are any unsafe operating conditions

  • Protection against unsafe operating conditions

  • Shutdown interlocks

The separated method is the traditional method required to implement a safety instrumented system (SIS) and a basic control system (BPCS). The integrated method is considered a new method. It is the execution of the solution. This method can help the SIS and BPCS logic solvers and workstations to function on common equipment. If the sensors can not detect the flame the Burner Management System can direct the actuators to atop the fuel flow to the burners, to slow down the flame.

O’Brien Energy Services has introduced the most advanced burner management system in the boiler. This system is popular for a few benefits such as improved turndown, onboard trending with a 10” touch screen oxygen trim option and many more.
